It has been just over a month since Mize dropped his highly Anticipated Balancing Act Ep on SSWAKAN records. The Alabama melodic bass DJ, whose real name is Ian Evans, is quickly becoming a household name in the bass scene. Since his official debut EP Thought Process in 2020, Mize has been pushing the boundaries of experimental bass. 2021 has been no different as he continues to impress Wakkan founder Liquid Stranger. From playing shows with STS9 to booking major festivals like Bonnaroo and Lost Lands Mize is having one hell of a summer. Balancing Act is just the icing on the cake.

Released on July 15, Balancing Act is full of downtempo beats and far-out synth work. It seems Mize took a little bit of everything and molded his past influences into one concrete sound. From trippy soundscapes to the trancelike bass you can feel the raw emotion put into each track. Balancing Act is a glimpse into the future of bass yet acts as an impressive ode to the melodic styles of the old school.
“Balancing Act is both a call back to some of the sounds and places that made this project come together in the beginning as well as a foreshadow of the new ideas, techniques, and themes I’ve been diving into as of late,” Mize explained.
The meaning behind Balancing Act
For Mize, balance is crucial for success in both life and music. Just as Mize balances old and new musical styles he has learned to balance all the facets of his life. Balancing Act doesn’t just showcase his evolution as a producer but how he has grown as a person.
“Constantly as I grow older, I notice that many aspects of my life are endless periods of balancing many things. Whether they be relationships, work, leisure, time, and even things as simple as taking care of your own body. I find that sometimes being an artist can be a Balancing Act of adopting new ideas while also attempting to keep the essence of what brought me here alive.”
Mize stands out with new EP
Balancing Act solidifies Mize as one of the most intriguing producers of this new era of electronic music. He takes us through the rabbit hole of sound with hypnotizing melodies and epic build progressions. From the opener Slow Approach to the closer I Need Your Heartbeat, Mize’s production is exhilarating and precise. The six-track EP is just the tip of the iceberg for the Alabama producer and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
