When it comes to timeless dance music, Chris Emerson, aka What So Not, will always be at the forefront of the conversation. Hailing from Australia, the iconic producer not only revolutionized the future bass sound of the 2010s but, over the past decade, has helped shape the trajectory of electronic dance music through sheer innovation and a yearning for self-expression.
Now fresh off his Dance Dance Revival Tour, What So Not is back with yet another brilliant journey into sound with a brand new EP, Motions. Released on Friday, August 16, Motions is an exhilarating collection of tunes that embodies the evolution of What So Not’s artistry. Paying homage to the multitude sounds that defined his career, the record is not just another EP but a love letter to dance music in itself.
Motions explores the evolution of sound throughout What So Not’s career.
Crafted as a love letter to dance music, Motions serves as a sonic time machine where What So Not traverses through the stunning expansion of his sound throughout his career.
From the vibrant beat-driven soundscapes of Lights Out with Benson and Lucy Lucy to the stirring basslines of Realise with Habstrakt and Maiah Manser, the EP takes listeners on a captivating trip through endless nostalgia and unfiltered emotions.
Motions is “A trajectory of love, passion, longing, deciphering, acceptance, trust, separation and ever after,” What So Not related.

Motions is designed to create a feeling.
With Motions What So Not didn’t just create sounds to dance to but music that’s tangible. Music that you don’t just listen to but feel. Whether it’s the hypnotic tones and mesmeric vocals of Tower In The Woods with MNDR or the immersive melodies and time-stopping sounds of Slow Motion with IMANU, the record creates an experience that stimulates both your senses and your soul.
“What is the sound of this feeling? This texture?” What So Not asked. “How do you reflect audibly what it’s like to walk barefoot in the grass on a foggy autumn morning? Where do I draw creation from and what are these visions representative of in my psyche? This has been my exploration through this EP.”
What So Not created a visualizer for each track.
As if the music itself wasn’t enough, What So Not created a cinematic visualizer for each track for a fledged immersion into sound consciousness.
“I have a place I go to in my mind for each song I make, he explained. “A unique destination that fills the senses and enables me to return to the same stream of consciousness in order to complete the work. I would often try to commission works to be reflective of these settings to pair with the audio, but with so many tech advancements allowing new possibilities, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying diving head first into this new medium of expression myself.”
