Have you ever gone to a show or festival after a sad event, like a loss or heartbreak?
I have, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.
There I was, swept up in the vibrant chaos—colors swirling, music pounding—but my chest ached with sadness, a heaviness I’d tried to push aside so I could soak in the joy of friends, melodies, and bass. Yet, despite the rhythm all around me, my thoughts spiraled inward, caught in the quiet void of grief. Turning to my friend, I confessed, perhaps a bit dramatically, “I just realized I’m trying to fill a hole that cannot be filled.” Without missing a beat, she replied, “Oh, you can fill it with trinkets!” I giggled at her words, a moment of levity in the darkness, unaware at the time that they carried a wisdom I wouldn’t fully grasp until later. Little did I know, her playful suggestion carried a depth I’d only come to understand later, when its quiet truth revealed itself.

At festivals, trinkets—tiny handmade bracelets, pins, charms, knick knacks—are more than mere decorations. They are symbols of connection, tokens exchanged in moments of shared energy and mutual recognition. These small tokens carry a weight far beyond their size; they remind us of the kindness and presence we crave, the need to feel seen and understood, even amidst the kaleidoscope of lights and the relentless pulse of bass.

The Culture of Trinket Exchange
Festival-goers understand that trinkets are never about their monetary value. Whether it’s a kandi bracelet traded in the middle of a set or a polished wire-wrapped stone handed over during a quiet conversation under the neon lights, trinkets serve as physical reminders of fleeting yet profound interactions. They embody the essence of PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect), the guiding principles of rave culture.
This practice of exchange feels almost sacred. You might catch a stranger’s gaze, share a knowing smile, and extend a small offering. In return, they might hand you one of their own, along with a piece of their energy. These moments transcend simple gestures; they are quietly transformative, reminding us that even in the midst of thousands, we are deeply interconnected, weaving our individual threads into a shared, luminous tapestry.
Trinkets, the Wall-E™ Effect, and Penguins Pebbling
This practice of collecting trinkets brings to mind Wall-E™, the lovable robot from the animated Pixar film released by Walt Disney Pictures. In his desolate, abandoned world, Wall-E™ spent his days salvaging small treasures—a locket, a spork, a Rubik’s cube. Though these items held no practical value, to Wall-E, they were symbols of the life and love that once thrived on Earth. His collection wasn’t just a hobby; it was a deeply human act, a way of holding onto meaning in a world that had forgotten it.

Similarly, penguins engage in a ritual known as pebbling, where a penguin offers a carefully chosen stone to its mate as a token of affection and commitment. This simple yet meaningful gesture serves as both a declaration of love and a foundation for their shared nest—a literal and symbolic act of connection.

Like Wall-E’s cherished objects and penguins’ pebbles, the trinkets we exchange at festivals are more than mere tokens, we gather trinkets as reminders of connection. They’re anchors to moments when we felt truly alive, deeply seen, and part of something greater. Whether crafted from beads, wire, or fragments of nature, these small items transcend their material form. They carry stories—of where they’ve been, who they’ve touched, and the connections they helped forge.
Energy in Every Interaction
“Every interaction is an exchange of energy. “
this exact phrase does not have a sole author, it resonates across various disciplines, reflecting a universal recognition of the energetic nature of human connections.
Trinkets are the physical remnants of those exchanges. They carry the essence of a shared laugh, a meaningful conversation, or the pure joy of dancing together under neon lights. These tiny tokens are reminders that the energy we give and receive is never wasted; it ripples out, shaping the world around us in ways we might not immediately see.
Sometimes, these exchanges go even further, leading to friendships that extend well beyond the festival grounds. Pictured below are diffraction glasses I bought about two years ago at my first HiJinx festival, worn at Okeechobee. They’ve been with me to every festival since, amplifying visuals and sparking endless ooohs and ahhhs from excited ravers eager to try them on. During one such moment, I encountered a group of ravers from Charlotte, NC, whose delight was so pure and contagious that something within me said, “Share this joy.”
So, I gave them my glasses. When I first got them, I’d painted the spiky tips with UV-reflective and glow-in-the-dark paint, making them uniquely mine. But in that moment, I realized I didn’t need to hold onto them anymore. The joy radiating from their group as they marveled at the visuals was more than enough. Their excitement transformed those glasses into something far greater than a personal keepsake—they became a symbol of shared happiness, a spark of connection passed from one hand to another.

These glasses have been part of so many unforgettable moments, and I’m thrilled they’re now with someone who will create even more memories with them. 😊✨
And that’s the beauty of trinkets: they don’t need to be expensive or flashy to hold value. A bracelet made from a child’s friendship-bracelet-making-kit, or a clip-on sprout secretly attached to your hydration pack zipper, can mean just as much as a flashy diamond ring. It’s the intention behind the object that gives it life, the thought and care that turn it into a vessel for connection.
Filling the Void with Connection
So, when my friend suggested filling the void with trinkets, she wasn’t offering a superficial solution to easing the pain that comes with grief. She was pointing to a deeper truth: healing isn’t about covering up the emptiness; it’s about honoring it, decorating it with the memories and connections that make life rich and beautiful. Trinkets become like stars in the dark sky of our souls, each one a tiny burst of light reminding us of the beauty in human connection.

Kayla got this keychain from a girl she met while waiting for Chappell Roan at Bonnaroo 2024. They were laughing about how they’d strategically chosen their spot based on where the shade would be when Chappell came on. Kayla joked, “It’s hot now, but when she comes on, it’ll all be worth it.” The girl smiled, reached into her bag, and handed Kayla this trinket. Now, it’s a permanent part of Kayla’s keys—a tiny reminder of shared moments, kindness, and that Bonnaroo magic. 🌈✨
We’re not meant to go through life alone, and festivals embody this truth in their purest form. As you collect trinkets, you’re not just gathering objects; you’re gathering stories, emotions, and shared experiences. You’re creating a constellation of energy exchanges that continues to shine long after the music fades.
The Legacy of Trinkets
When the festival ends and you find that bracelet or pin tucked into your bag, it’s like cradling a spark of that collective energy in your hands. Each trinket becomes a keepsake of the joy, vulnerability, and connection that defined those fleeting moments. Over time, they form a gallery of your journey—not just marking the places you’ve been, but the people you’ve met and the energy you’ve exchanged.
Trinkets remind us of a simple yet profound truth: even the smallest gestures can carry immense weight. They gently whisper that healing and meaning don’t come from grand, sweeping changes, but from the tiny, intentional acts of connection we create along the way.
So, the next time you’re at a festival—or even in the rhythm of everyday life—remember this: every interaction is an opportunity to exchange energy, to fill the spaces within us with the beauty of shared moments. Collect your trinkets, cherish them, and let them remind you that you’re part of something greater, a vibrant and interconnected whole. And perhaps, like Wall-E™, you’ll discover that even in life’s quietest or most desolate moments, there’s always a treasure to be found, a light to carry forward.
So, dear readers, do you have a favorite trinket or a story to share? We’d love to read about your moments of connection! Share this article to kickstart a conversation and let’s keep that energy flowing—hehehe!

With lots of love & light,
